Attention all beer bloggers!

We at Buckbean believe that the online beer community is the most underrated and, at times, unappreciated group of beer enthusiasts and experts out there. Since canning our first beer a little over two years ago, we have one group of people to thank for helping us accomplish a great reputation all over the US- and that’s the group of the dedicated and highly opinionated bloggers and online journalists who gladly accepted our free samples and press release sendouts.

Because of the mutual loyalties we’ve established with the community of thirsty critics, and the endless amounts of coverage and support they’ve given our brewery, we’d like to offer a little something back to them.

But, it doesn’t come without a little work. We like to see you sweat.

Here’s the deal:

In 2009, the owners of Buckbean came to the realization that the perks of canning beer are beyond what the public understands, and that the most effective way to spread the gospel of canned beer would be to conduct a competition and tasting festival. This year, we expect to draw 50+ craft breweries from around the world to compete and participate in the celebration of canned beer. We're working on building it into an event similar to the sold-out festivals and beer gatherings, as well as being looked at as a sort of landmark in the culture of beer.

The event is CANFEST, one that many of you are already familiar with (thanks for all the love last year, by the way!). This year it’s back, and we’ve got plans to make it bigger and better than ever. Additions are being made left and right to help build the event into a must attend for beer fanatics. And that’s where you come in!

Want to attend as well? Cool, I bet you do.

Starting now and lasting until the 1st week of September, we’re offering those with an established beer blog (meaning you didn’t build a blog simply to participate in this contest) an opportunity to write one blog post, centered on why they deserve to come to CANFEST. We are very partial to creativity and humor. Once your blog post is live, send the link back to my constance@abbipr.com email with an appropriate subject line.

Once we’ve got the compiled list of blog posts, we will post every link to our blog and filter via social networks, and pick a winner based on votes. The winner will be flown to Reno for the weekend and have the opportunity to attend all of CANFEST’s festivities and even be a guest judge during the competition portion. Yes, we will feed you too.

So now you’ve got the details- on your mark, get set, GO!

Cheers and happy writing!

Buckbean Brewing brings CANFEST to Reno
Dozens of brewers from across the country will showcase unique beers at Grand Sierra Resort

RENO, NV (June, 2010) — Buckbean Brewing will once again turn Reno, Nev. into the center of the canned microbrew universe this October, as it puts on CANFEST – Reno International Canned Beer Festival, the world’s first canned beer festival, for a second straight year.

Dozens of breweries from around the world will converge on Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort and Casino on October 9, offering up their canned creations to beer enthusiasts from around the region. The heavy hitters of canned microbrewing — names like Oskar Blues, New Belgium and Bohemian Brewing — showed up last year, as well as a large selection of small craft can breweries like Mudshark, Uncommon Brewers and Surly Brewing in addition to international beers from Europe, Asia and North American. Buckbean Brewing co-founder Dough Booth said he expects almost all brewers from last year to return. Winners of a judged canned beer competition will be announced the night before the event at an awards dinner.

CANFEST is both a recognition of the fast-growing popularity of canned craft beer and a celebration of the benefits of the aluminum cylinder. Long regarded as a symbol of inferior beer, the can has come into its own in recent years as beer drinkers realize that cans offer superior protection from sunlight and oxygen infiltration, and the containers are much more portable and environmentally friendly than their glass counterpart.

The notion that world-class beer can be delivered in a can has caught on, and now the number of microbrews offering canned beer is growing at an astonishing rate. In 2002 the first microbrewery began canning craft beer; today over 52 microbreweries offer their brews in a can, according to the National Brewers Association.

And as the canned beer craze continues to catch on, organizers expect CANFEST to expand.

“It was our first event last year, so it was pretty local, but I think that will start changing,” said Buckbean Brewing Co-founder Doug Booth, of CANFEST’s growing audience.

Buckbean, the largest production microbrewery in Western Nevada, started canning unique microbrews in Reno in 2008. Their beer — from a crisp, dark German Schwarzbier called the Black Noddy Lager to the unique Original Orange Blossom Ale and the rich, hearty Tule Duck Red Ale — represents co-founders Doug Booth and Dan Kahn’s outside-of-the-box thinking on everything from brewing ingredients to the container the beer is packaged in — 16-oz. beer cans.

CANFEST was just a natural outgrowth of Buckbean’s enthusiasm for great beer in a can.

“I think every other town or brewery has a beer festival. Some have music; some have food; some have judging. They all seemed fairly similar. We wanted to create something unique,” said Booth.

Beer Dinner @ Dragonfly in Truckee this June!

Back by popular demand, Dragonfly Restaurant is once again teaming up with Reno’s Buckbean Brewery for another Beer Maker’s dinner on Friday, June 11. This year’s event is made even more enticing with a lodging package, which offers 20 percent off rates at the venerable Truckee Hotel within easy walking distance from Dragonfly.

A flavorful encore, Dragonfly’s Billy McCullough and Buckbean Brewing Company’s Doug Booth and Dan Kahn will again join their forces in presenting the Buckbean Beer Maker’s Dinner on Friday, June 11, at 6 p.m. at the Dragonfly in Truckee.

“I was immediately impressed when I met Doug – the way he spoke about beer was almost like how a chef talks about food,” recalls McCullough. “Dragonfly was the first restaurant to carry Buckbean. Partnering with Buckbean is in keeping with our whole philosophy of local sustainability and supporting local products.”

Brew master Dan Kahn says pairing food and beer is a little different than pairing food and wine.

“With wine you generally look for flavor contrasts, while with beer you generally pair similar flavors, although contrast can also work very well in some cases,” Kahn explains. “Billy understood all this right away.”

Kahn says the vast range of beer flavors and styles makes for great food pairings. West Coast brewers like Buckbean have put the same type of creativity and experimentation into their beer that California chefs, like McCullough, have shown with their food.

“So the two are actually a very natural match,” Kahn adds. “The Original Orange Blossom Ale, in particular, is an excellent match for all of Billy’s Asian dishes. The fragrant complexity of the orange flowers really highlights other bright flavors like cilantro, citrus, ginger and hot pepper.”

Consider some of culinary highlights of the Buckbean Brewery Beer Maker’s Dinner. The savory repast begins with hot and spicy shrimp potstickers paired with Buckbean’s Roler Bock and continues with a grilled Kobe beef slider with Great Hill Farms blue cheese, caramelized onion and IPA infused ketchup paired with Buckbean’s Adaven IPA. The menu’s centerpiece is the Red Ale Chinese five spice braised Muscovy duck with ginger mash potatoes, which is served with Buckbean’s Tule Duck. The sublime dinner is concluded with a Noddy glazed chocolate cake with caramel Chantilly cream paired with Buckbean’s Black Noddy.

Beer Maker’s Dinner participants will also have a chance to meet the affable brew master, learn about the brewing processes, taste the malts, smell the hops and more. The four-course dinner, which includes beer pairings, is priced at $42 per person. Seating is limited and reservations are highly recommended. For dinner reservations call 530-587-0557.

The Beer Maker’s Lodging Package offers guests who wish to spend the night in Truckee a 20 percent discount on any Truckee Hotel room for the evening of June 11 which can be booked by calling 530-587-4444.

Dragonfly is located upstairs at 10118 Donner Pass Road, right in the heart of downtown Truckee. For more information on Dragonfly, visit www.dragonflycuisine.com or follow us on Facebook and Twitter for up-to-the-minute news and updates. We're offering two free pints and cheese and crackers to those who show up in their swimwear and pose for a picture that will appear in the Celebrator Beer News Magazine

Straw colored with a thick, white head, the clean lager aroma strikes a delicate balance of sweet malt and fine German hops. A touch of Munich and pale Caramel malts provide fullness and depth, and a clean, moderate hop bitterness balances the malt sweetness nicely.

From our friends at Lake Las Vegas:

We wanted to help the Village at Lake Las Vegas spread the word regarding the current happenings at the Village after the closing of the Ritz and casino. out there.
Please remember to support them, they're great colleagues and pals.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Village Lake Las Vegas continues business operations and events without interruptions

Operations of planned events, entertainment, shopping and dining options unaffected by changes

LAS VEGAS – March 4, 2010 – The past month has seen several business adjustments to Lake Las Vegas, including the announcements of the Ritz Carlton and Casino MonteLago closings. However, the owner of The Village Lake Las Vegas, a separate entity from both the Ritz Carlton and Casino MonteLago, reiterates that despite the loss of these two operators, the business operations and events at The Village will not be affected.

“It’s sad to see the two operators go, but The Village is alive and well,” said Maurice Talley, commercial manager of The Village. “We’re resilient and optimistic that the closure of Ritz Carlton is only temporary and another announcement will be made in the very near future regarding that property. The Village drives its own traffic with events and entertainment, and is going to continue to do so.”

Located just 17 miles from the heart of Las Vegas, The Village is home to more than 30 unique shopping and dining options and is currently at 91 percent occupancy with its various tenants.

Multiple lodging options are available for guests within The Village and Lake Las Vegas. MonteLago Village Resort provides two world-class properties within The Village and nearby waterfront area. MonteLago Village Resort offers guests room options from one to three-bedroom units, some located directly within The Village and most with romantic views of Lake Las Vegas. Pairing Beer With Food- A post from our brewmaster

Our one and only brewmaster, Daniel Kahn, is not only a terrific brewer, but a pretty decent writer.
Here is a little tidbit of Dan's on pairing beer with food. As an experienced brewer AND chef, Dan knows that food and beer go together like pimps and their lady friends. He adds onto the end further descriptions and suggested pairings for the three signature Buckbean brews.
Read this and find out why we love Dan, not just because he's a part of Buckbean, but because the man knows his stuff.

PAIRING FOOD WITH BEER:

In this country, we are just starting to realize something that most European cultures have known for centuries: great beer pairs as well with great food, and often better than, wine. Partly, this is because the most key ingredient in beer is malted barley. Barley is a dietary staple – beer truly is food, and the way that barley is prepared during malting produces a huge range of flavors, aromas and colors, many from the very same compounds that comprise the rest of our food. Additionally, there are many important flavor components from the hops and yeast that create dramatic variation in beer flavor.

I have 10 years of experience as a chef, including a stint with Mario Batali, which has not only been useful when combining and balancing flavors to create new beers, but has left me constantly aware of how my beers interact with other foods as well. Consequently, I work very hard to make sure our beers have balance and depth of flavor, but also finish cleanly without lingering aftertastes, or any harsh elements. Each of our beers is distinct, and offers a variety of elements to pair with foods.

OOBA: The signature characteristic of this unique beer is the elegant, aromatic orange blossoms, though it has enough malt body to accent starchy foods, and enough hops to be dry and balanced. This beer is full of bright flavors, and pairs especially well with other bright tasting foods: citrus fruits, fresh herbs (dill, basil, mint, cilantro), tangy cheeses like feta or goat cheese, and hot chilies. It also goes especially well with light pasta dishes, pastries, or fish, and makes a superb marinade for chicken.

Tule Duck Red Ale: This rich and malty ale has a deep red color, a silky, smooth body, lots of caramel malt flavor and a soft, evergreen hop aroma. Its richness stands up well with hearty game meats and savory herbs like sage and rosemary; tomato, barbecue or fruit sauces; and aged cheddars, goudas, and other complex, medium-sharp cheeses.

Black Noddy Lager: This is a black lager with a surprisingly light body and moderate roasted character. The roasted flavors really highlight any grilled, roasted, or seared foods, and smoked meats, fish or cheeses. It also goes well with dark, earthy flavors like mushrooms, oysters, or soy sauce. It makes a good dessert beer as well, complementing both chocolate and vanilla flavors.
